Newsworthy

Here are two stories that have been in the news lately:

The first is an MP3 of a service at SmallBoatBigSea a church in Sydney, and the second is an article that appeared in Saturday's West Australian about Upstream Communities.

I'm never sure if media attention is a healthy thing or not, but the stories are there for you to read and listen to as you wish!

Lonnie Frisbee - Legend or Loser?

As of today the Lonnie Frisbee story is available on DVD.

I have ordered a copy to look into the life of this amazing and complex man from the 60's Jesus people era who influenced so many for the kingdom and who died of AIDs in 1993.

Smallboatbigsea on ABC

Via Mike Frost:

The ABC has discovered the Emerging Church!

Maybe we're becoming too conventional! Radio National came to smallboatbigsea last Sunday and recorded our service and conducted interviews with various members about why they attend etc. I was interviewed in the ABC studio this week and the whole shebang goes to air on Sunday night at 6.00pm. The frequency in Sydney is AM576. Not sure where you find it on your dial. You can download a podcast after Sunday anyway. It's part of the ABCs Spirit of Things segment with Rachael Kohn.

Great Opportunity to meet with Mike Breen

As rector and team leader of St. Thomas' Church in Sheffield, Mike Breen used LifeShapes to grow the largest church in the north of England, with 80 percent of the congregation under age 40. On staff at Community Church of Joy in Glendale, Ariz., and as a teacher for Fuller Seminary in Calif., Mike helps church leaders in transition and coaches church planters on how to be effective in our contemporary culture.

Mike and his wife Sally are visiting Perth briefly. There is a one off occasion to hear Mike share some of their journey to becoming one of the world’s most important missiological thinkers.

Where? St Philips Anglican Church, Corner Napier and Marmion Streets, Cottesloe

When? Friday 17th November - 7:30pm – 9:30pm

Please RSVP by email to: office@stphilips.net.au

The Backpacking Journey

The backpacking journey is often about much more than seeing the world. Travellers are often seeking to find themselves and their place in the bigger picture as they move from place to place.

Recently we have been having some discussions about how we may be able to reach out to the backpacking crew and how Forge may be able to equip and support those who see it as their mission to serve and engage with backpackers.

We may even be able to build an internship around this form of mission, sending people into backpacker lodges for a period of time or setting them up to work with churches who see this as a part of their mission - eg Scarborough Baptist.

Interested?

Drop Hamo an email or leave a comment here.

Contextualisation Gone Mad?...

During a recent trip to Thailand I came across some innovative and boundary pushing missionaries from New Song church in LA.

They were wonderfully refreshing people and willing to ask hard questions about context and gospel.

They spoke to me about the 'New Buddhism', the term they use for the gospel planted in buddhist cultures.

Here is the article they sent me.

Mike Frost Hates Worship?!...

No way!

That's not what he said!

Tell us what you think!

As part of obtaining feedback from the local WA community we have an online survey online which we would love people to complete.

You can access it by clicking here. It will take you 5 or 10 minutes maximum.
